Beer:
Beer has a lot of terminology and acronyms, here'a a quick guide...

Ale
Brewed with top-fermenting yeast at warmer temperatures, which produces a wide range of complex, fruity, and spicy flavours. Most popular craft beer styles, including IPAs, are ales.
Lager
Brewed with bottom-fermenting yeast at cooler temperatures, resulting in a cleaner, crisper, and smoother taste.
The IPA's
(India Pale Ale)
West Coast IPA:
The original American craft IPA style. These are typically clear, highly bitter, and feature citrusy and piney flavours from American hops.
DIPA (Double IPA): Also known as Imperial IPA
This is a stronger, more intense version of an IPA, featuring a higher ABV (typically over 7.5%) and more pronounced hop flavour and aroma.
DDH (Double Dry-Hopped)
This term refers to a brewing technique, not a specific style. A DDH beer is one that has had a second dose of hops added during or after fermentation. This process boosts hop aroma and flavour without adding extra bitterness. A beer can be a DDH IPA or a DDH DIPA.
NEIPA (New England IPA): Also known as Hazy IPA or Juicy IPA
Unlike West Coast IPAs, NEIPAs are hazy with a soft mouthfeel and focus on fruity, tropical hop aromas and very low bitterness.
Session IPA:
A lower-alcohol version of an IPA, generally under 5% ABV. It offers the flavour and aroma of a full IPA while remaining easy to drink over a longer period.

Triple IPA (TIPA):
The next step up from a DIPA. These are even more potent, with higher ABV and an intense hop profile.

The Rest
APA (American Pale Ale):
Similar to an IPA, but typically with a lower ABV and more balanced flavour profile that is less hop-forward.

Imperial Stout:
A stronger version of a stout, with higher alcohol content and more complex, intense flavours.

Sour:
A broad category of beer known for its intentionally tart and acidic flavour.
Gose (pronounced "GOH-zeh"):
A unique German-style sour wheat ale known for its crisp, tart, and salty character, often with notes of citrus from added coriander. It's highly carbonated and has a low ABV.

Pilsner:
A crisp, light lager that is typically golden and has a clean, slightly sweet malt character with balanced hop bitterness.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume):
A measure of the alcohol content.
Stout:
A dark ale made with roasted malt or barley, giving it rich flavours like coffee, chocolate, and caramel.

Porter:
A dark ale similar to a stout, but generally with less roasted flavour and more notes of caramel and chocolate.
Wheat Beer:
A light, usually cloudy beer made from wheat, often with notes of banana and clove.
Kölsch:
Originating in Cologne, Germany, this is a "hybrid" beer. It uses an ale yeast fermented at warmer temperatures, but is then conditioned at cooler temperatures like a lager. This process results in a delicate, crisp, and clean-tasting beer with a subtle fruit and malt character.

Session Beer:
A broad category for any lower-alcohol beer meant for drinking over an extended period.

IBU (International Bitterness Units):
A measure of the beer's bitterness from hops.
